ORDWAY TEAD and District
Attorney Dewey didn’t answer the people, but the teachers did. They said:
For centuries
wise men and brave men and patient men have searched for the truths by which
men ought to live.
For centuries
men have fought for the right to know. That is the great tradition.
That search we
propose to continue.
That tradition
we mean to maintain.
This is America, Mr. Jones and Mrs. Smith and Mr.
Giovanni and Mrs. Abramson, and by your grace, by the grace of the people, we
pledge to keep it America.
That is the
meaning of this story—which is not yet ended.
